Area Info: Park City, Heber City and Midway
Heber Valley, Wasatch County
The area established in the late 1840’s originally as farming, livestock and dairy industries, is a four season destination. With a population of approximately 10,000 it has much to offer people with a variety of interests. In the Heber Valley are the communities of Midway, Daniel and Charleston, all active communities situated between the Unita and Wasatch ranges.
In the spring, summer and fall enjoy water sports on any of the three reservoirs – Jordanelle, Deer Creek or Strawberry. Take advantage of the blue ribbon fly-fishing on the Provo River or hiking in the Unitas. There are five championship golf courses, three public and two private, in the Heber Valley. That’s 135 holes of golf with fantastic views! One of the newest is Red Ledges, designed by Jack Nicklaus, has both a long course and a short course. In addition, activities like Swiss Days, Sheepdog Championships and concerts in the parks keep the summers busy.
During the winter months, the average temperature is a comfortable 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Take advantage of cross country skiing or tubing at Soldier Hollow in Midway, the 2002 Olympic Winter Games venue for the Nordic events. Sundance ski area is only 20 miles away, plus 8 more ski/snowboard areas with an hour’s drive. Hot air balloon rides, horseback rides and snow shoeing are just a few of the activities available.
Heber is located 50 minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport. If you have your own plane the Heber Valley General Aviation Airport provides access for small planes and private jets. Park City is a quick 15 minutes away via Highway 40.
Educational opportunities are plenty in Heber. All public schools, there are four elementary, two middle and three high schools. In addition, the University of Utah, Westminster and Salt Lake Community Colleges are 50 minutes away in Salt Lake City, Brigham Young University is a 30 minute drive to Provo, Weber State is an hour away in Ogden.
Park City, Summit County
Park City is an old west mining town that has grown over the years into a thriving business and recreation community. Its history is rich with stories of success with over $400 million in excavated from the miles and miles of tunnels that exist still today and created 23 millionaires, including the father of newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst. And at least some of that history is captured in the 64 buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today what drives Park City is the abundance of activities for people of all ages and abilities. Three resorts: The Canyons, Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain Resort, provide miles of terrain for one to take advantage of both summer and winter. There are public and private golf courses for all ability levels. Deer Valley Resort, Park City Mountain Resort and the Utah Olympic Park were official venues for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, where the US won 14 medals at those venues. In the summer months mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding and skate parks add to the atmosphere of recreation that Park City thrives on.
There are numerous options for schools in the Park City area with three elementary, two middle, three high school and five private, there’s something for everyone. Many elite level athletes are based in Park City and there are high schools and colleges that work with athletes on coordinating their training and competition schedules with their education. The Park City area includes Deer Valley, Snyderville, Deer Mountain, Summit Park, Oakley, Coalville, Francis and Peoa.
In addition, the University of Utah, Westminster and Salt Lake Community Colleges are 30 minutes away in Salt Lake City, Brigham Young University is a 45 minute drive to Provo, Weber State is an hour away in Ogden.
Even with all of this, there’s still more that Park City has to offer. In addition to being a host of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, Park City is home to the Sundance Film Festival, Park City Winterfest, the U.S. Ski Team, U.S. Snowboarding and the U.S. Bobsled Federation. Park City has a calendar brimming with art, film and music events that draw visitors from around the world. There are more than one hundred fantastic restaurants and award-winning gourmet dining venues.
Park City is located 30 minutes from Salt Lake City. Arrive in the morning and you can be skiing or golfing by the afternoon! Average temperature in the winter is 22 degrees Fahrenheit and summer is a comfortable 82 degrees.
